DC Comic Characters: John Constantine Trivia

Other Constantine trivia that didn’t make it into the video:

– First appeared in The Saga of the Swamp Thing #25 in June 1984, and was created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben.

– Pop star Sting has long been credited as the visual inspiration of Constantine.

– With the video getting already really long, Arden didn’t get a chance to talk much about the stunning visuals throughout the Hellblazer series, but it’s really worth commendation. Half of what he read was just cool to look at as solid gothic art.

– In addition to his own appearance, John’s ancestor Lady Johanna Constantine also plays a significant role in the story of The Sandman.

– Amusingly, the long running show Supernatural bears many similarities to the Constantine series. This isn’t a coincidence, nor is Constantine a rip-off of Supernatural. Instead, Hellblazer served as a huge influence with the development of Supernatural (and lots of other occult-themed media) in general, and specifically inspired the character Castiel’s wardrobe.

– Constantine is bisexual, first really explored in Brian Azarello’s run though it has come up again in more modern comics, including some of the most recent issues of the self-titled Constantine series.

– Arden may be incorrectly pronouncing “Constantine” with a “teen” as opposed to “tyne,” though technically that is an acceptable way to pronounce it in America. We’re Canadian but… whatever. Apologies to the UK for once again butchering their language.
