Death Of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #5 Recap

In the slums of Madripoor, and man and a woman are interrogating an agent named Kim.  The agent was Hydra’s eyes and ears at a recent auction held in the city.  The auction featured many groups, including HYDRA, AIM, and even the US government, all interested in one thing: the three last pieces of Wolverine’s remains.  The bidding began at 50 million dollars.

By the time the bidding began, people were already dying.  Nobody knew yet, but outside, the guards were silently being taken down.  Daken, the son of Wolverine, was on the scene.  Daken detonates a mine on the roof, but the auctioneer assures everyone that the building is secure and all is well.  The bidding resumes and the last bid come from AIM for 340 million dollars.

Then it happened.  Daken burst into the room and instantly kills the auctioneer.  His bodyguard hits him with a breath of superheated plasma, but Agent Kim says that Daken looks and acts different, as if the son of Wolverine is barely even human anymore.  He easily handles the plasma breath and slaughters the bodyguard.  Everybody tries to run but Daken has sealed the exit.

Daken says that these are his father’s remains, and that nobody is to touch them.  Anyone who tries to buy, sell, trade, or replicate any piece of Wolverine will be hunted down and killed by his son.  Three people will live to deliver this message.  The rest will be his demonstration.  The son of Wolverine begins to slaughter everyone in the room.  In the end as Daken promised, only three remain.  Viper, a woman, and agent Kim look on in shock.  The woman is revealed to be Mystique, who is outraged at Daken’s actions and says she would have won the auction and put Wolverine to rest once and for all.

The two who are interrogating Agent Kim are not happy though.  They demand to know why Daken let him live, but he will not say.  The woman’s eyes begin to glow, and she reads his mind to discover Daken let Agent Kim live because they were once lovers.  The two HYDRA agents remark that this is too bad, as they could have used them.

Two days later, Daken has taken Wolverine’s remains to Okinawa.  A woman agrees to begin a ritual in Wolverine’s name, but states there is not much she can do with the scarce remains of Logan.  Daken asks that she only does her best, and the ritual begins.  Daken goes through with the ritual and funeral, until it is time for the removal of the bones.  Daken says only one thing: “Father.”

Death Of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #5 Review

Hello and welcome to Comic Island!  My name is Arden, and this is my recap and review of Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #5.

You know, you really can’t judge a comic book by its cover.  I didn’t expect I was going to enjoy this issue of The Logan Legacy.  Daken has never exactly been my favourite character, and I’m getting pretty tired of all these follow-up comics to Wolverine’s death, especially considering that he died a month ago at this point.

But I really like this comic.  Every single page features Daken going through with a funeral rite and it corresponds with the main story perfectly.  That’s excellent writing and I really like this comic’s story.  Daken has clearly been changed, and for those wondering why, I’ll give you a brief explanation.

See Daken is Wolverine’s son, but Logan never really knew about him and so the boy was instead raised to be not only a killer but just an all-around bad person.  It’s a compelling story, but I’ve always found him rather annoying as a character, and to me he’s always been a sort of bratty version of Wolverine.  So when he died in Uncanny X-Force, I was kind of happy to see him go.  It was a brutal, sad death that fit with Daken’s character and left his story on a solid note.

So I was a bit disappointed when the inevitable happened and Daken was raised as part of the Horsemen of Apocalypse in the pages of Uncanny Avengers.  This is the first we’re seeing of Daken since that time, and it looks like he’s been changed quite a bit by this experience.

And I find it rather fascinating.  This is a new and different Daken and I really was surprised by this aspect of the comic.  I want to see more of how Daken as changed, as he seems to have gained a sense of honour, though he fights more like an animal than ever before and kills people mercilessly.  That’s an interesting combination, and something I hope we see more of in the future.

I also just adore the art in this comic.  Viper doesn’t say one word in this comic, but just look at her face on this page.  It says so much, so I give a lot of kudos to Elia Bonetti, the artist of this comic.  Everyone did a really good job with the Logan Legacy and I actually do recommend this comic.
