The Regent is having an appointment with his team of top-level scientists and doctors. He asks if his augmented body will be able to handle the powers of Spider-Man. His doctor is surprised at this question, as Spidey’s powers are mid-level at best. Regent’s body should easily be able to handle Peter’s powers even when coupled with those of the Hulk, Professor Xavier, and two dozen other superheroes. But that’s not what Regent is worried about. He wants to know if Spider-Man’s powers were to fade if they were absorbed like other superpowers he has absorbed. He goes on to say that Spider-Man’s powers are special. The Baron of the Regency needs his abilities to accomplish a great task. In this world nothing else matters, and in comparison, all the other heroes he has collected is nothing but a collection of worthless junk.
Elsewhere, the Tinkerer works alone in his shop, until Spider-Man enters, asking for a set of inhibitor chips. The old villain is amused at this, knowing that Peter has come to him before regarding this technology. Back then, he was happy to help to put an end to Spider-Man. Now, he decides to turn the hero in, activating a silent alarm. Peter’s Spider-Sense detects this, but it is too late. The Sinister Six expected Peter to visit the Tinkerer, and Doctor Octopus immediately attacks the shop.
Outside, the Sandman observes the rest of the Sinister Six moving towards Spider-Man. He contacts SHIELD and asks what he should do. SHIELD is uncertain, as they are stretched thin having just used a lot of resources to save the Powers family. Mockingbird wants to save the hero, even though Spider-Man abandoned the Avengers long ago. The man leading SHIELD, who appears to be Nick Fury, is uncertain about this, and promises to do what he can.
Meanwhile, Spider-Man easily dodges his old enemies attack. Octopus has changed over the years, having replaced his own limbs with a living metal. But Peter doesn’t have time for Octavius’ antics, and promptly breaks one of his new arms clean off. As these new limbs are hardwired to his brain, Doctor Octopus is moved to tears over the tremendous pain. Still, Octopus mocks Peter, saying the villains can’t be turned into the authorities because they are in charge now, and next time, Octavius will be ready for Spider-Man. But Peter tersely replies their won’t be a next time.
Later, the rest of the Sinister Six arrives only to find Octavius badly mauled and crying over his missing arms. Kraven realizes that Peter’s behaviour is that of a father looking after his cub. He knows his prey, and has a plan to draw Spider-Man out of hiding. At the Parker home, Annie is watching a news broadcast declaring the return of Spider-Man. Jameson is back to his old ways, shouting about how Spider-Man is a menace and a threat to everything great the Regent has built over the years. Mary Jane turns off the TV, but Annie wants to know if the big screaming-head guy was right.
Her mother clarifies that Spider-Man is no monster, and that, as they’ve discussed, he’s just Annie’s father. But Annie points out they’ve never really talked about this in much detail. So MJ says she will answer any questions he daughter has about Spidey. The girl asks what he was like, and why he became a hero, and Mary Jane explains what happened to Uncle Ben, and how this turned Peter into a superhero. When asked why he stopped, MJ lies and says it was for no particular reason. Annie asks if it was because Peter lost, but MJ lies once again and says that Peter never lost, and won every time.

Parker comes home, and wishes Annie a good night. He then tells MJ that he has everything he needs to make another inhibitor for himself and Annie, when suddenly, a broadcast from the Regent begins. The Baron declares that tomorrow, all students at Annie’s school will be subjected to a compulsory screening. The Parker parents know that this means the Regent is well aware that Spider-Man has a child that attends the public school, and they know if they don’t go, they will instantly be exposed.
They report in to the place where the scans are being held – on the grounds of the former Avengers Mansion. Peter asks if his daughter is scared, and Annie says that she is, but her Spider-Sense is not tingling. Parker reassures his daughter that this means her inhibitor bracelet is working, and they have nothing to worry about. Sure enough, the Parker family passes the scans and Kraven’s sniff test without incident. However, as they try to leave, an alarm sounds.
It seems that one of the other schoolchildren is a mutant who has just discovered his new powers. As electricity surges from the confused child, Peter’s instinct is to run, but Annie is confused. She thought Peter was a hero. Parker realizes his daughter is right, and calls for an emergency family meeting. He wants Annie to live in a world of heroes, and says that they should fight this. MJ says it is them against the world, and Annie agrees, knowing her dad can do anything.
So Spider-Man slips away to put on his costume. The plan is to take on the remaining five members of the Sinister Six, all of whom are here, to buy his wife and daughter enough time to escape. Peter kicks off the fight by webbing the Hobgoblin’s pumpkin grenade to his own hand, causing the villain to explode in midair and crash into a statue of the Regent. He begins to fight the rest of the Sinster Six, while Mysterio begins comparing earlier security footage with now. The master of illusion knows that one of the families here is going to be suddenly missing the dad, and then they’ll know exactly who Spider-Man and his kid are.
Peter is doing well against the forces of the Regent but he is badly outnumbered. Annie wants to take off her bracelet and help, but MJ says it would not be responsible for her to let her daughter put herself at risk like this. However, mother and daughter are unaware they are being observed by two others, who grab the family. As Peter is pinned by Kraven and surrounded, all he can do is call out for his family as they are taken away.
Hello and welcome to Comic Island! My name is Arden, and this is my recap, and review, of The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #3.
Alright, so I’ve talked at length quite a bit about this series right now. There isn’t much to add at this point, as the story and art have largely remained consistent. I also find myself just enjoying the story more and more and caring less about how much better Renew Your Vows is compared to the last 10 years or so of mainstream Spider-Man comics. Which is great, because I have really, REALLY been enjoying this series so far. Everything works, from the action to the emotional scenes with the Parker family, it all serves to be one of the more entertaining and interesting Secret Wars Tie-Ins.

This comic is filled with great moments, from Regency revealing he has big, unspecified plans for Spider-Man, to the Parker family agreeing to become fugitives for the sake of helping others, this story promises a lot and delivers on all of it. I can’t wait for next issue, and it suggests some very cool stuff is coming our way.
I enjoy how Spider-Man is unhinged here. It makes sense, because these bad guys can’t be turned over to the police, and he needs to get them out of the picture. Peter isn’t unstable or filled with angst, he’s just doing what he has to in order to protect his family. I also am curious what the Regent has planned, exactly, and what is going on with SHIELD, who apparently employs Flint Marko, also known as the Sandman. These next two issues are going to be very exciting and interesting. Personally, I can’t wait, and yes, I recommend you check out Renew Your Vows #3 for yourself.
